Washington, DC – The International Leadership Foundation (ILF) honors the life and legacy of Dr. Henry C. Lee, who passed away on March 27, 2026, at the age of 87. We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Lee’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life and work. We honor his remarkable contributions and celebrate a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
A famous forensic scientist, educator, and public servant, Dr. Lee leaves behind an unparalleled legacy of innovation, leadership, and global impact. Internationally recognized for transforming the field of forensic science, he served as a forensic expert in all 50 U.S. states and more than 46 countries, consulted for hundreds of law enforcement agencies, and testified in over 1,000 cases. His work shaped some of the most high-profile investigations in modern history and fundamentally advanced scientific methods in criminal justice worldwide.
As a distinguished professor at the University of New Haven for more than five decades, Dr. Lee founded its forensic science program and later established the Henry C. Lee Institute of Forensic Science. Under his leadership, the program became one of the nation’s premier institutions, training generations of professionals who continue to carry forward his vision and commitment to excellence.
Beyond his extraordinary professional achievements, Dr. Lee was deeply devoted to mentoring and uplifting young people – a passion that remained at the heart of his life’s work. As a 2021 ILF Lifetime Achievement Awardee and later an Honorary Advisor, he played a meaningful role in advancing ILF’s mission of developing leaders and empowering future generations. He was a constant and beloved presence at ILF chapter events, where he gave generously of his time, sharing not only his knowledge but also his personal journey, values, and encouragement.
Dr. Lee had a rare ability to connect with young people across backgrounds and disciplines. In 2022, as keynote speaker at the ILF Leadership Conference Luncheon, he went far beyond delivering remarks – he engaged directly with students, listening, mentoring, and challenging them to pursue excellence with integrity and purpose. He believed deeply in the potential of every young person he met and inspired them to think boldly, work tirelessly, and serve others. His warmth, humility, and unwavering belief in the next generation left a lasting impression on countless students who saw in him not only a global leader, but a trusted mentor and role model.
Dr. Lee also served as Chief Criminalist for the State of Connecticut, Director of the Connecticut State Police Forensic Science Laboratory, and Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Safety. His distinguished public service reflected a lifelong commitment to justice, integrity, and scientific excellence.
Born in Rugao, Jiangsu, China, and later immigrating to the United States, Dr. Lee’s life journey embodied perseverance and determination. From his early career as a police officer in Taiwan to becoming one of the most respected forensic scientists in the world, he remained steadfast in his dedication to education, mentorship, and giving back. He authored or co-authored more than 40 books and was actively working on a final publication in his final days.
Throughout his life, Dr. Lee championed the values of hard work, optimism, and service. His personal motto, “Make the impossible possible,” continues to inspire all who follow in his footsteps.
