Mr. Louis Yip established himself as a restaurateur in Rhode Island before transitioning into commercial and residential real-estate development. Mr. Yip was born in Tai-o, Hong Kong and studied at Columbia Junior College. Upon immigrating to the US, he started one of the first Chinese restaurants in Rhode Island with his brother-in-law. Mr. Yip has focused on creating and fostering a strong Chinese community as an active leader in the Rhode Island Chinese community and as Chairman of both the Chinese Christian Church of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Association of Chinese Americans. Mr. Yip’s involvement with the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council has resulted in the annual Rhode Island Dragon Boat Race, which includes Chinese arts and crafts, cuisine, and musical performances by local and international dance troupes. Furthermore, Mr. Yip established the Luke Charitable Foundation, which raised money for Red Cross China, funded the construction of a school after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and established an annual scholarship for high school students which helps pay for their college tuition and sends each recipient to China for a 3-week cultural immersion trip. Mr. Yip also serves or has served on the board of directors for organizations such as Salvation Army, the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, RI Zoological Society, International Institute of Rhode Island, the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, and the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council. Mr. Yip has stressed the importance of family and community in each of his endeavors. He believes that it is a person’s civic duty to be active in the community to create positive change.
